Our Challenge

Breckenridge is widely regarded as a winter haven, renowned for its annual snowfall averaging 300 inches. This abundant snowfall serves as a catalyst for a myriad of exceptional outdoor recreational activities throughout the winter season. In collaboration with CopperTree Analytics and Setpoint Systems, the Town of Breckenridge kicked off an initiative to implement advanced data analytics and fault detection diagnostics for several buildings. Setpoint Systems, as the local Building System Integrator played a pivotal role in assisting and implementing the energy-saving opportunities found by CopperTree Analytics using the Kaizen software.

The majority of the buildings involved in this project were community and municipal establishments, spanning across sectors such as service, hospitality, transportation, sports, and entertainment. Given the essential nature of these buildings, any deviation from their intended functionality could potentially undermine the community’s vibrant image and disrupt normal routines and operations. Consequently, the primary objective of
this project for CopperTree Analytics was twofold: to decrease energy consumption and resolve faults.

Our Solution

Through Kaizen, several crucial findings emerged:

• Energy saving opportunities: Incorrect configurations of economizers, makeup air units, and pumps were rectified, resulting in reduced energy consumption and operational costs.
• Optimal equipment operation: Adjustments to air conditioning systems and pumps improved efficiency and extended equipment lifespan.
• Timely equipment maintenance and replacement: Early detection of issues such as valve leakages and faulty sensors facilitated proactive maintenance, averting disruptions to occupants.
• Comfort in heating and cooling: Adjustments to BAS setpoints resolved temperature control issues, enhancing comfort

Our Results

The potential and realized savings across all sites amounted to USD 63,600, equivalent to powering approximately 877 homes’ electricity use for one year. Beyond monetary and energy savings, the project led to improved building performance, prolonged equipment lifespan, and enhanced occupant comfort.
