About the Project: The CDHB (Canterbury District Health Board) Hillmorton Specialist Mental Health Service (SMHS) provides a range of mental health services for the Canterbury region, including impatient and outpatient care, community-based support, and specialized services like forensic and youth mental health. The new SMHS facilities were designed to support healing and recovery; meeting both the physical and psychological needs of users, providing a safe and positive environment for staff and supporting the key role of whanau in partnership of care through the recovery journey. The design of the architecture and landscape received valuable input from iwi, clinicians and people with lived experience—whaiora and whanau having freedom of choice to access and move through the outdoor spaces and a connection with nature were important considerations.
